Buried Fire is a musical ride through love lost, gained and squandered, told through 16-plus songs from The Blues Cabaret’s new album “Where Love Begins.” It’s conceived by Dave Fleschner, composer, lyricist, arranger, singer and pianist from Portland, who’s toured internationally with Curtis Salgado and played with B.B. King. The story is by Wayne Harrel, two-time Oregon Book Award Finalist and author of the Fertile Ground favorite Remme’s Run. And it features a trio of amazing singers, headlined by San Diego’s Earl Thomas, a powerhouse, international vocalist and Grammy-nominated songwriter himself. Flanking Earl are two of the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus’ top soloists: sweetly dapper Jimmy Wilcox and salty Nashville sessions man Billy Mixer. There’s a rent party feel to every performance as they reminisce about That Night on the Rooftop, savor The Thrill of the Chase or ask the eternal question: Was this love written in the stars, or was it just tagged on a wall? Love is a Merry-Go-Round, writes Fleschner in this soulful new show, and Buried Fire is so worth the trip.
