Rogue Pack’s Stories from Maclaren is facilitated by playwright Francesca Piantadosi. Piantadosi conducts playwriting workshops at Maclaren Youth Correctional Facility for incarcerated boys in the custody of Oregon Youth Authority. Ten boys, ages 12–24, will share their personal stories by writing an original and authentic piece of theatre. Piantadosi guides the boys through the scriptwriting workshop process. Each week their plays are read aloud and critiqued by fellow students. A dramaturg and director participate to discuss their functions in the theatrical process and provide feedback. In the rehearsal process, the boys collaborate with professional actors who will perform their scripts and bring their stories to life. Via videoconferencing from Maclaren, the boys will watch the performances and participate in audience talk-backs after each show along with the performers. Rogue Pack provides an open forum in which these incarcerated youth, who come from surprisingly diverse cultures and backgrounds, can reveal their challenges, hopes and desires. This is an opportunity for these youth to connect with the greater Portland community through artistic expression, resulting in cultural understanding between the playwrights and audience. Youth gain a greater understanding of their own cultural identities as the public realizes the challenges these boys face and are given an opportunity to offer their support in these troubled times.
